The Penobscot is 16 foot long and 1100 pound capacity, for plenty of room for gear. These canoes have an ash carrying yoke as well as thwart and matching ash framed web (canoe reversible for solo paddling) seats. This is a current and highly desirable model in the Old Town Canoe fleet.

Named after the Native American tribe that has inhabited Old Town, Maine since before recorded history – and from whom we have gained immeasurable canoe building knowledge – the Penobscot pays homage to their superb craftsmanship, sense of design and navigational skills. This is not just a beginner’s canoe! This boat has greater secondary stability, greater speed, and enhanced tracking ability. This canoe is in the Tripping / Expedition category.

This canoe has very little rocker, making it a great tracking canoe, and faster than most. She will blast across the water with less effort, and a slightly flared side with a water line width of 33” and top width of 34”. This contribute to reducing drag, again improving speed and reducing resistance. The shallow arch bottom meaning rounded slightly results in great secondary stability. Secondary stability is when you lean the boat with "body english" to steer the boat or make it do different things. There is a roundness to the center area (on the sides of the canoe) with a sharper taper towards the ends, so this boat turns easily as it is leaned up on edge, for such a fast boat with little rocker. Thus, the Old Town Penobscot canoe is also a great boat to advance your skills if you have the mind to do so. It also has sharp entry lines, (sharp stern and bow ends) for smoothly cutting the water and reducing drag. Quick, smooth, you can glide across the water with less effort! This is enough for everyone else to enjoy about the superb shape of the Penobscot Canoe by Old Town. Fast for still water, is this boat’s primary benefit to its features!

This boat is made from Royalex, a beautifully finished inside and out eight layer material that has been made in flat sheets under a tightly controlled manufacturing process by Royalex, holding a tight tolerance thickness and lay-up. The sheet consists of inner and outer layers of vinyl resisting cutting, then multi-layer ABS on the inside and outside, and a core of foam for flotation, rigidity, insulation, and reduced weight. The sheet is then heated in what looks like a giant pizza oven, then pulled out and draped over a "rounded table" to be pulled up into a cold vacuum mold to be perfectly formed to the boat hull specifications. Royalex built canoes have two quality control points. One quality control point is when the material is made, and the second time is when the boat is made. The Royalex sandwich construction canoe material means a far lighter weight than any other boat in its class at 58 pounds for a 16 foot boat!
